WINES
Wine – lat. vinum - is an alcoholic beverage that is made from the fermented juice of grapes. A distinction is made between red, white and rose wine. By specific oenological removal methods during storage numerous biochemical maturation processes may form a highly complexness and also cause that some wines are aged for decades and are durable.
Over several millennia have countless varieties in the growing areas, developed by natural crossing and following selection through targeted crossing of one or more varieties. The different varieties allow, especially if they are well suited for a location, the vinification of differentiated qualities of wine. Of nearly 16,000 known varieties only about 1,000 varieties in the official lists are approved for viticulture worldwide. In many wine regions wines are varietal. In some wine regions such as Bordeaux or Chianti, however, a tradition of blending different varieties has developed historically.
The quality level of the wine is prescribed by the wine law specifying the wine quality. Details are subject to national wine laws, therefore, the quality levels are difficult to compare internationally. Quality levels of the wines are determined in the countries and regions through a variety of different criteria.
The most important criterion in Austria and Germany for the classification of wines in the various quality levels are the output, must weight or the natural alcoholic strength as a measure of the maturity of the grapes (wine without origin, land wine, Quality wine, Prädikats wine).
