PIWI - varieties

PIWI - fungus-resistant grape varieties - have for a few years been understood as vines or varieties of vines which, due to their better resistance to fungal diseases, need not or only to a limited extent be treated with pesticides.
Most of today's piwi varieties are based on French hybrids. Although the gradual thinning of non-European genetic material improves the taste characteristics, mildew resistance suffers. Consequently, the new Piwis rely on crop protection, but the number of applications can be significantly reduced. The use of copper and thus the heavy metal contamination of the soil can be superfluous with piwi vines.
