Rioja

End of the 19th Century, when France came to a virtual standstill by phylloxera, there was a huge demand in the Rioja. Around 500 000 hectoliters of wine were exported monthly to France.
Even today, Rioja, with around 61,000 ha is one of the most important wine regions in Europe.
Rioja is divided into 3 parts: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alava. In the first two regions primarily grows the local grape Tempranillo, in Rioja Baja in particular Garnacha. The classic Riojas are either varietal Tempranillo wines or blends with Tempranillo share of well over 50% and shares of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano.
By selecting quality grapes, balance mixing ratio of grape varieties and sensitive expansion in wooden barrels produced Rioja some of the most highly classified wines in the world.
