Wachau
The Wachau wine-growing region is the narrow Danube valley between Melk and Krems. Unmistakable wines grow on 1,291 hectares, some on steep terraces, which may be declared as Wachau DAC from the 2020 vintage. The best locations produce some of the greatest white wines in the world with decades of development potential, above all Grüner Veltliner Riesling.
Since the mid-1980s, the "Vinea Wachau" regional protection association has divided the dry white wines and, in rare cases, rose wines of the Wachau into three categories according to their natural alcohol content: Fragrant light wines up to 11.5% vol. are called "Steinfeder"" (after the feather grass "stipa pennata"), the classic category (11.5 to 12.5% vol.) operates under "Federspiel" (term from falconry hunting), powerful reserve wines are called "Smaragd" (from 12.5% vol.), after the eponymous emerald lizard.
